Ingredients that make this smoothie perfect for pregnancy
Our bodies are working hard when we’re growing an entire human. These foods are particularly supportive of the specific nutritional needs during the first trimester and throughout pregnancy, and even postpartum!
Spinach: blends smoothly and may be easier to tolerate than some other greens if you’re feeling nauseas. It’s rich in folate, essential in the first 4–6 weeks for forming the baby’s neural tube (brain + spinal cord). It also provides iron, which supports early blood volume expansion for momma!
Avocado: provides monounsaturated fats, which support your baby’s brain and nervous system development starting very early in pregnancy. It also contains folate, which continues to support neural tube formation, and the healthy fats support blood sugar balance which may minimize morning sickness symptoms.
Greek yogurt: Greek yogurt adds high-quality protein (important as the uterus and placenta develop) and calcium to support your baby’s bone and heart development. After testing multiple versions, I like 5% yogurt best for the creamiest texture, but 2% works great too (just don’t use fat free)
Frozen Pineapple and Fresh Orange: both great sources of vitamin C which helps improve iron absorption (important for managing first-trimester fatigue). This antioxidant also supports immune function during pregnancy.
Mint & Ginger: Fresh mint and ginger can help support digestion and ease nausea, especially helpful with the common symptoms of constipation and nausea during early pregnancy.
